COPD Compass

By creating an app where COPD patients can find out the state of their COPD using an official questionnaire (The Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ) health questionnaire) and a breathalyzer via a bluetooth device, patients can get immediate help when things are bad and stay home when things are going well.

The Challenge

COPD patients could not easily find out the extent of their COPD and how they can be helped remotely. Sometimes patients have to go for weekly check-ups to the hospital when nothing is wrong. This feels like a waste of time for them. It also caused some patients to not check in their health anymore, because it was too time consuming. Some of the challenges that you can consider in your case study are:

  1. Making the customer journey as short and simple as possible;

  2. Take into account that the COPD patients are usually a bit older and need a higher level of accessibility;

  3. Providing personalised insights via a bluetooth device.

Process

The steps that were taken to come to get a good understanding of the target group and their problems, and to create fitting solutions for their needs and wishes were as following:

  1. User interviews & research

  2. Analyse the findings

  3. Ideating the solution

  4. Craft a prototype with the main idea

  5. Test with users to validate the idea via heuristic evaluation and usability testing

Solution

The solution is a digital platform where patients can find out the state of their COPD using an official questionnaire (The Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ) health questionnaire) and a breathalyzer via a bluetooth device. Patients are given tips on what they can do (if any), can read articles or take a quiz to get better at coping with COPD Compass.

Key takeaways

After researching, designing and testing, the reactions of the target group were very positive. The COPD Compass app meets user expectations during the sign-up process, find the duration of completing the daily and weekly check-up good and efficient. Users find the amount of time they need to be on the app in order to get an health check is effective and are happy they don't need to go to the hospital anymore.
